Last month, I threw a twin first birthday party with a Mickey and Minnie Mouse theme for my two one-year-olds. I still can’t believe my little babies are one. It sounds cliche, but it really feels like just yesterday I was freaking out because they were about to be born six weeks early. And now here they are, walking, talking, and making my life completely insane. The life of a twin mom is never dull that’s for sure.

To celebrate their birthday, I knew I wanted to throw a fun twin first birthday party that was Disney-themed in some way. Because they’re boy-girl twins, I knew a Mickey and Minnie Mouse twin first birthday party would be perfect. We even did a Mickey and Minnie Mouse-themed cake smash photoshoot before the party with Sugarloaf Photography.

When I prepared for the party, I scoured the internet, specifically Pinterest, for ideas on twin first birthday parties and Mickey and Minnie Mouse parties. I found a ton of ideas for a twin first birthday party and I ran with a few of them. Then, I went to the local Party City store and bought everything they had in the one-year-old Mickey and Minnie Mouse section. Balloons, banners, confetti, streamers, etc. If they had it, I bought it. I think when the kids look back at the photos they’ll appreciate all the effort I put into their party.

I didn’t want all of the decorations to be store-bought, so I also designed and printed chalkboard-style posters for each child to hang on the wall. Using Photoshop, I created the posters and combined a basic chalkboard background with a variety of font styles. After designing twin first birthday posters, I had them printed at my local Staples store, it was super easy and affordable.

I also took on making all of the desserts for the party. The homemade desserts included cupcakes, Rice Krispies treats, and Mickey and Minnie Oreos. Way more desserts than we needed, but they looked and tasted delicious!

One of the coolest ideas I saw during my search for birthday party games for one-year-olds, was the punch piñata. I found it on Grey House Harbor while on Pinterest. The directions were super simple and the end product was cute and fun. All the kids loved it!

I also decided to create a time capsule for the kids. I set up a table with the time capsule box and colored cards and envelopes with pens. Each guest was instructed to write a card to each child with their predictions of what they’ll be like at 18 and advice for them. At the end of the party, I closed the box and put it away in my closet. I can’t wait to open all the cards on their 18th birthday. I have to admit, I’m still waiting to write my cards to them…I’m slow!

The party was overwhelming and crazy and so much fun. We invited friends, family and of course, other babies. I think we had more than 10 kids total come for the party, which is nuts.

There were five things that I learned from throwing this party that I think will help me with the twins’ future parties:

  1. Research ideas ahead of time!

    • I started researching and pinning ideas for my twins’ first birthday party before the kids were even six months old. It was important to me that their party was special and fun. I put a lot of work into creating a fun atmosphere for them.
  2. Remember the age of your partygoers.

    • When thinking about the kids of food to serve and the games to play, I constantly reminded myself that the majority of the kids attending would be around 1-3 years old.
  3. Accept help from friends and family.

    • This lesson was hard to me to learn. As a twin mom, sometimes you need to ask for help and be willing to accept help. Even though I knew how important it was to accept help, I was still reluctant. However, once I let go of my reluctance, I was able to let me friends and family help me decorate and watch the kids while I got the house ready for the party.
  4. Take as many pictures and videos as you can.

    • This lesson is relevant for pretty much all of your kids’ lives, but especially true during their first birthday party. I regret not taking more photos actually. But I’m grateful for the ones I haveand I love to look at them and reminisce about that great day. Trust me, you won’t regret having too many photos so take as many as you can and enlist the help of a friend to take a bunch for you so that you can focus on celebrating.
  5. Let go and have fun in the moment.

    • This is by far the most important lesson that I learned. Once the food is made and the decorations are up and the party has started, relax. Enjoy your children. Laugh with them. Play with them. Watch them eat cake and have fun with their friends. I was so stressed out before the party, but I made a conscious effort to let go of the stress when the party started. I relaxed and just had fun. These memories are precious and you won’t regret being able to be in the moment with your kids.Smash cakes for my twin first birthday party
